STACK Infrastructure Plans 1 Million SF Data Center Campus in Ashburn

STACK Infrastructure will build a 216-megawatt data center in “Data Center Alley” in Ashburn, Virginia, the company said today. The new 80-acre site will feature three buildings and offer nearly 1 million square feet of data center space.

The large new Ashburn campus is part of an aggressive expansion in Northern Virginia by STACK, which recently announced plans to expand its campus in Manassas in Prince William County, where it will add two 36-megawatt buildings.

STACK said its Ashburn campus will be powered by 100% renewable energy from Dominion Energy, with delivery for the first phase of the campus scheduled for the third quarter of 2023.

“STACK’s forward development in the most challenging markets is our differentiator. Our clients seek speed, scale, quality, and partnership. This new flagship campus exemplifies that,” said Brian Cox, Chief Executive Officer of STACK Infrastructure. “I am proud that our development team was able to deploy its expertise while building strong relationships to deliver the on-demand capacity, in key locations, that top technology innovators need.”

More Capacity in Data Center Alley

The new campus will provide STACK with cloud-scale capacity in Ashburn, the nexus of the massive cloud cluster in Northern Virginia, which is home to more than 150 data centers and tens of millions of square feet of data center space. As the cloud grows, having servers in the region has become the table stakes for companies with ambitions in cloud computing.

STACK has a presence in Ashburn, where it operates an 18 megawatt facility that was built by America Online in 1998 – the original “You’ve Got Mail!” data center. STACK, which was formed in 2019 by investor IPI Data Center Partners with assets acquired from Infomart Data Centers and T5 Data Centers, has always aspired to additional capacity in Data Center Alley, which the new campus will amply provide. STACK currently has 300MW under active construction and anticipates significant continued investment in the region over the next 12 months.

“STACK’s forward development in the most challenging markets is our differentiator. Our clients seek speed, scale, quality, and partnership. This new flagship campus exemplifies that,” said Brian Cox, Chief Executive Officer of STACK. “I am proud that our development team was able to deploy its expertise while building strong relationships to deliver the on-demand capacity, in key locations, that top technology innovators need.”

STACK’s latest Ashburn campus news follows recent international expansions including entering the Asia Pacific market via the opening of its Singapore regional headquarters, the initial phase of construction of a 56MW campus in Toronto, Ontario, and a soon-to-be-completed new 24MW facility in Hillsboro, Oregon, which will bring STACK’s Portland-area total capacity to over 50MW.

“STACK’s development team continues to leverage its relationships with utilities, local authorities, and developer partners to establish a strong, scalable presence in critical markets like Northern Virginia, despite land and power scarcity,” added Tim Hughes, Vice President of Strategy and Development at STACK. “Dedication to our clients has driven STACK to secure campus-scale sites and electrical interconnections to allow hyperscalers and enterprises continuous expansion in key markets.”
