As the pressure to maximize uptime and optimize for efficiency and capitalization continues to grow, data center leaders are becoming more reliant on big data to gain a competitive advantage. But, with the massive amounts of data generated from your various data center devices, how do you know what to track and what your goals should be? To help improve data center health and efficiency, Sunbird has compiled a list of 40 top KPIs to track to gauge the success of your business.

The report covers key performance indicators from nine different aspects of data center operations. From asset management to capacity planning and energy efficiency, the KPIs were selected based on Sunbird’s “conversations with hundreds of customers in [their] global user groups for [their] Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) solution.”

First up, the paper presents six KPIs specific to capacity. They include capacity by key data center resource and logical group, stranded power capacity per rack, and DCOI compliance. Data center energy cost and cost per customer are the two metrics explained in the cost section of the paper, while asset age and deployment trends are covered in the asset section.

“It’s more critical than ever to integrate, analyze, and act on the KPIs that have the most impact on your data center.” – Sunbird, Top 40 Data Center KPIs

Other key metrics Sunbird suggests data center leaders track are those around change, space, power, efficiency, cooling, and connectivity. The paper says that collecting and analyzing data in these areas will foster improvement in data center health and efficiency “while dramatically simplifying capacity management.”

While the list of KPIs included in the white paper is extensive, Sunbird says that measuring them is easy when using a data center infrastructure management solution. DCIM software can help managers identify trends and make data-based decisions across all aspects of the business, without a huge time investment. The paper says that “a modern, second-generation DCIM tool provides all your most important KPIs right out of the box with zero-configuration dashboard widgets, reports, and visual analytics.”
